I still vividly remember the first time I ever went to Charleston South Carolina. It was the middle of winter in Michigan, and I was hanging out with a friend of mine. We both had a break from school, and we were trying to figure out what to do. When I found out that my friend had never seen the ocean, it struck me as a revelation. I wanted him to see it. That very day, we decided to drive. The question was whether to go to the East Coast, or to drive south. The way the land slopes in the United States, both drives were about the same distance. We decided to go to Charleston SC because it was going to be quite a bit warmer down there. After all, who wants to go to the ocean just to stand in the cold wind and shiver?

Once we got down to Charleston South Carolina, we were overjoyed. It was absolutely gorgeous. There were beach houses everywhere. Basically, it combines the laid-back attitude of a beach front town with the classic style of a southern city. The Charleston downtown was a lot of fun. Even though it was the off-season, there was still music to be heard. We were not there for the music, or even for the delicious ribs, however. We were there to hang out on the beach.
